２０１０年にはラットホールギャラリーで展覧会を開催しましたね。展覧会はいかがでしたか？
You had an exhibition in Tokyo in 2010 at Rat Hole Gallery.How was the exhibition?
ガーダー: 合同での展示会でした。最初にニューヨークに移ってからすぐに知り合った友人Oscar Tuazonと２人で行ったものです。彼とは同じWhitney Programに通い、いくつか作品も共作しました。オスカーは素晴しいアーティストです。それぞれの作品の最終形は全く異なることが多いですが、興味が似ていることとそれぞれのテーマ性が近いので、一緒に作品作りをするのはとても楽しいです。ラットホールはとても力強い展覧会を開催している素晴しいギャラリーで、国際的にも高く評価されているので、我々にとってもパーフェクトな場所でした。
Gardar: The exhibition was a two-person exhibition with my friend Oscar Tuazon who I have known since I first moved to New York. We went to the Whitney program together and have collaborated on a number of pieces. Oscar is a great artist and I really enjoy working together with him since we share similar interests and I think our work circles around similar thematics even though the final products often are quite different from each other. Rat Hole is a great gallery with a very strong program and is highly regarded internationally so it was a perfect place for us to do this project.
あなたの最後の展示はコントロールされた社会、社会問題、独裁政治などがモチーフだったと知りました。現代社会に対する憤りや疑いこそがあなたがアートを生む原動力のように感じられますが、どうでしょうか？
I read your works at last exhibition has motives related to a controlled society, social problems, authoritarianism etc. I wonder something like frustration or doubt to modern society would be motivated you to create an art. What is your motivation for making an art?
ガーダー: 僕の作品は大抵それらのキーワードを含んでいます。特に考えるのは、支配と独裁はどのようなイメージを持ち、権力を振るう側の人間はどのような美学を持っているのか（意識的にも無意識的にも）ということについてです。アートこそ、これらに対して発信して行くポジションにあると思うし、僕の興味も自分の中にある憤りから始まっているのは確かです。概して、アートは憤りや欠乏感に触発される必要があると思います。そもそもアーティストになるということは、少し反体制的な決断でもありますよね。他の職業を選ぶこととは一線を画しますし、現状維持の社会に対して何か表現したい気持ちが無ければ、この決断はしないと思います。
Gardar: My work usually touches upon these key words and I think specifically around how control and authoritarianism expresses itself in images, what are the aesthetics employed (consciously or unconsciously) today by those in power. I do think that art is in a good position to speak about these things and I do also think that my interest in them comes out of a sense of frustration. In general I guess art needs to be fueled by some sense of frustration or lack. The decision to become an artist is in itself a bit of a countercultural decision. It is different from choosing to take on another profession and I don’t think anyone would make this decision unless they felt they had something to express that went against the status quo somehow.
